Prof Phil Hugenholtz, the director of ACE, delivered the keynote address at the Microbiome R & D and Business Collaboration Congress in Hong Kong March 1-2nd. His talk titled, "Common but uncharacterised microbial populations in the Australian human gut," described the results of a study using whole genome sequencing to characterise the guts of 250 people. A high prevalence of uncharacterised microorganisms was discovered and he described the important roles the top 3 play in our gut. ACE members Kate Ormerand, David Wood, and Nancy Lachner also attended the conference, with Kate and Dave presenting their findings on how the microbiome influence graft vs host disease (GVHD) and actinic keratosis, respectively.
